2024: New projects & deciding to make Denmark my home

This year certainly started on a positive note. Completing an enjoyable first contract with Aarhus Symphony Orchestra was a huge step in my career. Following this, I’ve made the decision to settle in Denmark and to freelance, accepting a whole host of concerts and projects (including more with Aarhus Symphony Orchestra) that have recently come my way.

In January, an organ and trumpet recital in Randers marked the development of a new collaboration with Christian Præstholm. We performed music by Danish composers Frederik Magle and Leif Martinussen, as well as Handel, Martini and my personal favourite - Albinoni’s Concerto in D minor, which you can listen to here.

Chamber music continues be deeply woven into my musical identity. I loved performing Stravinsky’s Soldier’s Tale with Aarhus Solist Ensemble, as well as participating in Women of Brass - a brass quintet consisting of Denmark’s professional female brass players. It’s not often that female brass players work alongside each other, so discovering how we can best work together has been an enlightening and enriching process. I’ve often wondered if there are particular musical features that are typical of male or female musicians? For example, do men tend to play with more power and authority, while women explore the beauty or sensitivity of the music? As a female classical trumpeter, I've had to learn to do both.

I was delighted to join Aarhus Kammerorkester as they celebrated their 5-year anniversary with a successful concert in February, including a premiere of a Symphony by Magnus Plejdrup, the orchestra’s founder. The large solo features for trumpet allowed me to explore my soloist role within an orchestral setting - quite a different, yet enjoyable challenge after playing mainly “tutti” trumpet for several months!

As with any portfolio career, new challenges that stretch me in a different direction are commonplace. Most recently, I’ve begun conducting a brass band. Aros Blæserne offered me a job as their conductor, following a successful two-month trial. As a professional, I love working with musicians in the community who play for fun. By sharing in their joy, we shape the music and get the best out of our evenings together.

Upcoming: Announcing some new projects with Jutland’s professional orchestras, including works by Mahler, Mozart and Haydn. See concerts page for more info.
